Research Institute of Fruits and Vegetables (RIFAV)

 

 

Established on 3rd March 1990 based on the decision of Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industries (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development nowadays) on the basis of reunification of the Hanoi Canning Processing Centre, Vegetable Research Center, Gia Lam Agriculture Station, and the Fruit Research Centres of Phuquy (Nghe An), Phuho (Phu Tho) and Xuan Mai (Ha Tay).

 

FUNCTIONS AND MAIN TASKS

  1. Planning scientific programs, technological dissemination, training involving international cooperation in the aspect authorized by MARD.

  2. Studying on breeding, cultivating technologies, post harvest treatment of vegetable, fruit and ornamental crops aimed to be developed in large-scale.

  3. Studying on the development of fruit, vegetable and ornamental crops suited to differently ecological regions in the whole country.

  4. Participating in the research into consumption market of horticultural products oriented to fruit, vegetable and ornamental development.

  5. Disseminating advanced technologies to the producers of different sectors concerned.

  6. Collaborating with national and international agencies for studying, technology transferring and training in aspects concerning fruit, vegetable and ornamental production.

 

SUMMARY OF ACHIEVEMENTS GAINED

  1. Participating in the master programme and projects at national level on research and development of fruit and vegetable in Vietnam.

  2. A number of vegetable and fruit cultivar have been selected and improved for fresh consumption and processing such as: 3 of mango, 72 lines of longan, 2 of lychee, 6 of persimmon, 4 of mandarin, 3 of pumello, 2 of tomato, 1 of hot chilly, 1 of French bean, 1 of pakcher etc.

  3. Establishing some intensive farming guidance of horticultural crops for different regions in the whole country, also establishing procedures for processing many fruit and vegetable products in small scale system.

  4. Joining with central and local organizations in setting up the master plan in fruit and vegetable development for provinces in the country (Nghe An, Quang Binh, Son La province etc.)

  5. Publishing and delivering one monthly horticultural information newsletter and quarterly horticultural journal.

  6. Establishing and executing many international project on fruit and vegetable research in cooperation with international organizations from Thailand, France, Australia, Israel etc. and participating in many international cooperation project in collection and conservation of fruit and vegetable germplasm.

 

DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY FOR COMING PERIOD

  1. Completing the master plan of fruit and vegetable production for local consumption and export preferences.

  2. Strengthening the study on plant breeding of fruit and vegetable with high yield and quality: in which high protein and off-season vegetable production is one of priorities.

  3. Completing the study on cultivation techniques for crops and storage and processing for products.

  4. Research into diversification of processing products and packaging for fresh storage products.

  5. Establishing good infrastructure for nurseries of vegetable and fruit crops in order to become the best seedling supplier to farmers.

  6. Accelerating the international cooperation activities with international organization in order to improve the knowledge and skill of staffs in research activities.
