Research Report
Final Summary Report of SUSPER
(April 2007)
This report is a summary of the findings of the research done on market development in the Greater Mekong Region composed of Viet Nam, Lao PDR, and Cambodia. Problems and solutions were identified to achieve better matching between the peri-urban supply and urban market demand. This will have an impact on the quality, quantity, and consistent supply of produce available on the market. The study also looked on how to disseminate relevant information on market opportunities in an efficient and effective manner to the market stakeholders to help them in their decision-making process and increase cooperation in the market chains.

Seminar
Highlights on SUSPER project result
(June 6th, 2006)
The final seminar of SUSPER project will be organized between June 26th-28th in Hanoi to present major outcomes
from 5 years activities.
The peri-urban
agriculture has been characterized in the three countries. Market opportunities have been identified, related to price
fluctuations, imports, and the demand for food safety. Technical
solutions have been found to target these market opportunities and add
income in a situation of limited access to land. These solutions include
off-season tomato production, safe leafy vegetable production, and nylon
fish floating cages. New modes of labeling, control and communication
on vegetable safety have also been tested.

Rationale
By
2025, it is expected that 70% of the Asian population will be located in
cities. The population of Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Phnom Penh and
Vientiane is likely to double by 2020. Part of the poorest population
will then not only be located in the countryside, but also in cities. As
a result of urban growth, agricultural activities have developed in
areas within and immediately adjacent to the cities to provide food for
self-consumption and market purposes. Production from this sector
includes mostly perishable high value vegetable and animal
products.
