FACULTY OF FISHERIES- HCMC
UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE
AND FISHERIES

GENERAL
INFORMATION
The existing
faculty was established in 1967 as a
training unit of the College of
Animal Sciences, National
Agriculture Center. In 1974, it was
developed into one of the faculties
of Agriculture University. In 1996,
it was officially named as the
Faculty of Fisheries (FoF) under the
Nong Lam University (NLU) in Ho Chi
Minh City.
The Faculty of
Fisheries was set up to train B.Sc
students with three major
disciplines in the field of
fisheries, namely aquaculture,
aquatic resource management and
aquatic product processing. The main
subjects of aquaculture, aquatic
resource management and aquatic
product processing were brought for
the integrated approach in fisheries
education. Since 1999, the M.Sc
Programme of Aquaculture and Aquatic
Resources Management has been set up
in the Faculty of Fisheries.
Apart from
training human resources in the
field of fisheries, FoF has also
carried out research and extension
services for state and private
sectors in southeast provinces of
Southern Vietnam. There are three
primary functions of the Faculty,
namely teaching, research and
extension to meet regional needs for
fisheries development.
To enhance
teaching and research capabilities
and to improve staff capabilities,
the Faculty has established academic
linkages with foreign universities,
institutions and NGOs such as AIT
(Thailand) in the field of
aquaculture and curriculum
development; CIRAD & ORSTOM (France)
in the field of exchange of research
and staff members; Auburn University
(USA) in the field of information
exchange and AREC & Antenna
Technology (Switzerland) in the
field of extension program.
ACADEMIC STAFF
Department of Fisheries Biology
The academic
staff of the Department includes six
lecturers and two lab supervisors.
The Department has one Ph.D and five
M.Sc and the others are B.Sc holders
in the fields of Aquatic Ecology,
Aquatic Botany, Ichthyology, Aquatic
Zoology and Water Quality for
Aquaculture.
Department of Freshwater Aquaculture
The academic
staff of the Department includes
seven lecturers. One of them is Ph.D
holder, five are M.Sc holders and
one is B.Sc holder in the fields of
Freshwater Fish Culture, Fish &
Shrimp Nutrition, Feed & Feeding for
Fish and Shrimp, Fish and Crustacean
Physiology, Fish and Shrimp
Diseases, Fish Breeding and Fish
Genetics & Selection
Department of Coastal Aquaculture
The academic
staff of the Department includes six
lecturers. All of them are M.Sc
holders in the fields Fishing
Technology, Aquatic Resources
Management, Aquatic Specific
Organisms Culture, Crustacean
Culture, Mollusks Culture and
Brackishwater Fish Culture.
Department of Aquatic Product
Processing
The
academic staff of the Department
includes five lecturers. One of them
is Ph.D holder, two are M.Sc holders
in the fields Post Harvest
Preservation and Aquatic Product
Processing.
RESEARCH AREAS
The Faculty is
actively conducting the following
research projects under three thrust
areas namely, Aquaculture, Aquatic
Resources Conservation and
Management, and Processing of
Aquatic Products:
1. Management
and conservation of aquatic
resources in reservoirs;
2. Developing integrated
aquaculture systems;
3. Developing coastal aquaculture
systems subject to conservation of
mangrove ecosystems;
4. Sewage reuse and waste
management for aquaculture
development;
5. Aquaculture extension services
integrated in rural development;
6. Aquatic product preservation
and processing; and
7. Utilization of by-products from
fish processing factories as
supplemented feed for aquaculture
and animal husbandry.
