Pepper Diseases Bacterial Soft Rot Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora Found worldwide |
|
|
Damage symptoms Fruits develop water-soaked spots
that rapidly expand to entire fruit. Infected fruits will collapse
and hang like water-filled bags. During post-harvest, decay generally
begins as a stem end rot followed by total collapse of the fruit. Bacterial Soft Rot occurs on
many fruits and vegetables. The bacterium survives in plant debris,
insects, and even in soil. The bacterium enters through wounds
caused by insects or mechanical means. Rainfall and high temperatures
favor disease development. Harvested fruit can become infected
from contaminated wash water. Rotate with cereals and other non-susceptible crops. Provide good field drainage to enhance drying and reduce soil water splash. Harvest fruit when dry and handle carefully to avoid creating wounds. Avoid washing fruit when possible; if necessary use chlorinated water. |
