Cucurbit Diseases

Belly Rot
Rhizoctonia solani

Found worldwide

Damage Symptoms

Deep necrotic lesions are formed where the fruit touches the soil.

Conditions for Development

Occurs mostly on cucumber, and develops on fruit in contact with the soil. High soil moisture is conducive but not essential for disease development.

Control

Crop management practices that reduce soil moisture (raised beds), fruit injury, or prevent soil contact with the soil (plastic mulches or trellising) are recommended. Fungicidal sprays are not particularly effective but may in some instances reduce fruit losses.
